Troubleshooting

Solutions to common problems.

No video output

No video output

With the HDMI connected, power cycle the MVP to ensure an HDMI output is detected on boot. Ensure the MVP is playing back a video by sending MIDI to it. The display on the top of the device should reflect the MIDI note and video title that has been triggered. If no video is displayed, double check the MVP is receiving MIDI input and that the MIDI note received has a video clip mapped to it.

If the display is showing video playback but no video is appearing via the HDMI output, check to see that the correct HDMI source is selected on your video screens’ settings, and if necessary power the screen off and on and then the MVP off and on by unplugging the power source. If you still have issues, there may be an issue with the video file itself. Make sure your file conforms to the supported video specs and if necessary delete and re-upload your video.

If the issue still persists, test the MVP with a different HDMI cable and a different video screen to ensure there isn’t a technical issue with your hardware.

No DMX lighting output

If your lighting fixtures are not receiving any signal from the MVP, first confirm that the MVP is connected to your ArtNet node over Ethernet, and that your ArtNet node is connected to your lighting fixtures via DMX cable(s). Also confirm that your MVP is playing back lighting cues by checking the display on top of the device and ensuring a DMX cue is displayed as playing.

If you are still not receiving DMX signal to your lights, double check that the ArtNet node network settings are compatible with the network settings of the MVP. For more information on this see ArtNet Configuration.

Browser not connecting to MVP

Ensure the MVP is connected to your computer through the USB-C ‘host’ port and that the MVP is powered on as indicated by the status light on the front side of the MVP.

With the MVP powered on and connected properly it should automatically appear in your computer’s device or network settings:

On Mac computers, open click on the Apple menu and open ‘System Settings’. In ‘System Settings’ click on ‘Network’. The MVP should appear as ‘MVP’ as connected in ‘Other Services’. If you don’t see the MVP connected, try to power the MVP off and on. If the MVP still is not recognized, click on ‘...v’ in the bottom right and then select ‘Add Service’. Select ‘MVP’ as the Interface, and type MVP as the Service Name. Your computer should now recognize the MVP network connection through your USB port.

On Windows computers, open ‘Settings’, click on ‘Network and Internet’ and under ‘Advanced Network Settings’ click ‘Change Adapter Options’. The MVP should show up as an ethernet device.

When the MVP is connected and recognized by your computer, any browser should recognize it at the address mvp.local, however if the MVP configuration page is not loading you can alternately reach it by entering the IP address (http://192.168.3.1 on Macs, http://192.168.2.1 on PCs) in your browser. We recommend using Chrome, a Chromium build browser, or Firefox for MVP configuration.

If mvp.local does not work, but using the direct IP address does successfully load the UI, your computer has cached DNS settings resolving to another connection. We always recommend connecting to the UI via the USB-C host port, but this DNS issue can occur if you’ve connected to the UI at mvp.local via Ethernet, in which case your computer may automatically try to resolve the .local address to the Ethernet IP. To resolve the issue, you can try several things in this order:

  • Clear your browser cache

  • In your network settings, renew the DHCP lease for the MVP, then power cycle the MVP

  • Also in network settings, deactivate/reactivate the MVP, then power cycle the MVP

  • As a last solution for technical users, you can use a Terminal window to run a command clearing your DNS cache

DAW not recognizing MVP as MIDI device

Make sure the MVP is recognized by your computer as a MIDI device. Next, double check that the MVP is enabled as a MIDI device in your DAWs settings and that the MVP is selected as the output for your MIDI track(s).

Common issues with video screens

Resolution: the MVP will detect the resolution of your video output destination over HDMI and automatically adjust your content to fit. For the best results make sure your video files are rendered at the same aspect ratio and an equal or higher resolution as your output destination. The MVP will scale your content up or down to fit the entire video while preserving the aspect ratio, and in cases where the aspect ratio of your video file is different than the output this can result in black bars on the sides of your display where there is dead space.

Delay: the MVP has a negligible response time from receiving a MIDI trigger to playing back the corresponding cue, however depending on the length of your HDMI cable and the specs of your video output your system may have additional delay. We recommend testing your video playback any time your setup changes to appropriately compensate for the delay.

Inconsistent or under powered USB connection

Inadequate USB bus power can lead to issues with MVP's performance, particularly with networking and accessing the UI. For proper performance, ensure MVP has reliable, full power, especially when first booting. See below for tips:

  • Disconnect unnecessary USB devices that may draw power allocation away from MVP.

  • Connect MVP first before any other USB devices. Computers may allocate power priority based on the order of connection.

  • Connect MVP to your computer through a powered USB hub that will provide MVP with its own reliable power. Leave other USB devices connected directly to the computer or another hub so that they do not draw from the same power supply.

  • Once MVP has successfully booted via USB-C, you can connect the barrel plug PSU for redundant power. It's important that MVP first boots off USB power to load the proper gadget drivers.
