# Effects Mode: Crossfade

## Effects Mode: Crossfade

**Crossfade** brings smooth transitions to Effects Mode. When enabled, triggering a new video no longer cuts instantly — the outgoing and incoming clips blend across a configurable fade, exactly like a video mixer's T-bar. All eight real-time effects (brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, rotation, scale, position X/Y) apply to the combined image during the fade.

Crossfade is part of [**Effects Mode**](/2.-video-setup/effects-mode.md) and is available only when the Video Mode is set to Effects. Fast Trigger and Timecode modes are unaffected.

### Where to Find It

1. Click the **gear icon** in the top-right corner of any page.
2. Select **System**, then open **Beta Features**.
3. Expand the **Effects Mode (Video Playback)** panel.
4. Scroll to the **Crossfade** section.

There you'll find:

* **Enable Crossfade** — the master switch for this feature.
* **Crossfade Duration** — how long the fade lasts, in seconds. Range is **0.1 to 5.0** seconds in 0.1 s steps (e.g. `1.2`). The default when first enabled is **1.0** second.

Changes apply immediately to the next trigger — no restart required. Turning the toggle off disables crossfading entirely (instant cuts).

### Rules During a Fade

* **New triggers are ignored while a crossfade is in progress.** If you fire another note mid-fade, it's ignored. Wait for the fade to finish (plus a fraction of a second), then trigger again. Keep this in mind when choosing longer durations for fast-paced triggering.
* **Blackout crossfades too.** Triggering blackout (Note 0) fades to black over the same duration. Like any other trigger, blackout is ignored if a fade is already running.
* **Re-triggering the same clip restarts it instantly.** Firing the note of the clip that's already playing seeks back to the start with no fade, same as it always has.

#### Timecode Is Always Instant

Timecode playback is frame-accurate by design, so **crossfade is automatically bypassed whenever timecode is active** — clip changes driven by LTC are always instant, regardless of the Crossfade setting. You don't need to toggle anything off before a timecode show.

### Interaction with Effects

The MIDI CC effects (CC 48–55) and reset notes (110–118) work exactly as before. Effects are applied to the **combined output**, so during a fade both clips are colored and transformed together — brightness, hue, rotation, scale, and position all remain live throughout the transition.

### Good to Know

* **1080p limit.** As with all of Effects Mode, video is limited to 1080p 60fps (4K media is not supported in this mode).
* **Beta feature.** Crossfade ships as part of Effects Mode under Beta Features. Feedback to <support@4cast.world> is welcome.
